Kyle Brown no longer captain of South Africa

Kyle Brown, South Africa

South Africa’s hard working 7s captain Kyle Brown has relinquished the captaincy role in the lead up to the 2016-17 World Sevens Series.

It is a little surprising given that Brown is 29 and so should have another 2-3 years at the top at least. He may well make the next Olympics in 2020.

In the build up to the Rio Olympics, New Zealand’s DJ Forbes gave up the captaincy of the All Black 7s. But Forbes was older (31) and really just wanted to focus on being as fit as he could to win Olympic selection without the additional burden of the captaincy.

But given that the Olympics is now the catalyst for 4 yearly lifecycles, it is not entirely surprising.

We see new coaching appointments following the same cycle with New Zealand, Samoa and Fiji all following the 4-year appointment pattern.
