Kurt Baker is the first of New Zealand’s core Sevens squad from the 2010-2011 IRB World Series to sign a Super Rugby contract for 2011.
Baker will join Jamie Joseph’s Highlanders at their Dunedin base.
Baker moved from struggling Manawatu to ITM Cup semi-final contenders Taranaki this season in a bid to further his career.
Clearly the move has paid off and he will start a new chapter over the summer when the Super Rugby squads assemble.

I heard Stowers has one also with the Blues.
You may be right! I’m still checking for confirmation – you got a source?
I had drafted a long post about Kurt Baker’s prospects (concluding that the Highlanders – without a dedicated 15 – were his best chance) but hadn’t published it when I heard he signed with them.
I’ll get my post on the prospects of Mikklesen and Souness out now!
That will complete the 4 that I believe have the only real prospects of getting contracts.
Nothing against the other guys. Cama and Raikbula are Sevens Legends – they’re just not going to get into Super Rugby sides and there’s just too much competition for the likes of Toby Arnold and co but I could be wrong …
You are very well informed!
I’ll check my sources
I felt Lee could have been given more game time in those tournaments. He’s a devastating runner and big on defense.
It would be excellent reward for his hard work this season. He’s been a big part of the Steelers resurgence.
It would appear to be so – the Blues have signed Sherwin Stowers!
Congratulations to him! A great way to follow up from a gold medal!!
I heard that Fritz Lee also may have a contract with either the Blues or The Chiefs.
He played 7s in Wellington, Vegas, Adelaide and Hong Kong
